1 Star Check for the version number
Beware which version is purchased! I purchased a “new” copy of version 4. (The version number was not advertised.) The current version number is 8 and it appears to be only available from the current publisher, McGraw Hill as an $85- paperback. If you are not taking a class the older version may be ok but I am in a class.
The CURRENT VERSION IS 8
5 Stars A terrific introduction to financial management
This is an exceptionally clear text. All the basics of corporate finance are covered with real life examples taken from real corporations (large and small). The explanation of the concepts and the logic behind all accounting parameters is very clear. Higgins knows his stuff well and does a great job in guiding the reader to a good understanding of the subject. The material is well organized and it flows in a logical manner. Mr. Higgins even managed to sprinkle some humor throughout the text, which makes it all the more enjoyable.
This book is worth every penny.
5 Stars Finance made fun!
Higgins is definitely the most instructive and easy to follow Finance books I’ve read. I’m currently using Brealey-Myers-Allen, and Higgins, and definitely recommend the latter.
5 Stars For those who want to know the real stuff behind the financial numbers
What this book is NOT: This book is not a detailed treatise on financial statements, ratios and how to create financial statements
What this book IS: This book tells you what is behind the numbers. And it does it really really well. It introduces the key ratios in the beginning and from then on, the chapters delve into various aspects of the key financial statements. It provides real life data using financial numbers of real companies. It deals with everything from what drives (operationally) the numbers and ratios; what kinds of capital a company can raise; valuation among other things.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to understand whats behind the numbers and how to effectively analyze issues within the company that impact the financial statements.
4 Stars Good overview.
This is a good overview of how to measure company performance and investment opportunities, and how this is supposed to be used in the management of a company, in takeover situations, common investments, etc.
However, while the book does offer a good overview it seems to cram too much information into too few pages. The writing style is also somewhat academic in its use of long sentences that are sometimes difficult to understand. Additionally, I would have liked to see a proper derivation of the Discounted Cash Flow formulas because they form the basis for a significant portion of the book, and they can actually be derived quite elegantly in just a page or two using Geometric Series.
PS: This review is for the 8th edition.
